Google is tracking your every move even when you tell it to stop?.

According to an Associated Press investigation published yesterday (Aug. 13), If you’re using an Android phone or have Google apps installed on your iPhone, the search giant is almost certainly tracking your location constantly – even if you’ve turned that setting off.

The AP investigation was inspired by a blog post from K. Shankari, a University of California, Berkeley computer science graduate student, which called out the search giant’s “background data collection” practices that log user information without explicit consent.

From her blog post

K. Shankari –  I want to clarify that I am not opposed to Google, or to background location tracking in principle. My personal phone is an Android (although my next one might not be), and my PhD thesis is on building an open-source mobilityscope (https://e-mission.eecs.berkeley.edu/). I chose this topic because I believe that if used properly, such trip diaries can have many positive impacts on the way we design cities. But I also think that tracking people without their consent and without proper controls in place is creepy and wrong, and judging from the furor about social media data collection, a lot of people agree. I hope this blog post contributes to the ongoing privacy discussion by broadening the domain from web search and social media to automatic collection of privacy-sensitive data. It also raises questions about the complex relationship between competition, transparency and control when the data collection infrastructure is proprietary.

here’s how to fix it

In a web browser (mobile or desktop)

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com
  2. Sign in to your Google Account in the upper-right corner of your browser
  3. Go to Personal Info & Privacy and choose Go to My Activity
  4. In the left hand navigation bar, click Activity Controls, where you’ll see Web & App Activity
  5. Toggle Web & App Activity off
  6. Scroll down and toggle Location History off as well

In Google Maps for Apple iOS devices

  1. Tap on your Google Account (in the left hand navigation bar)
  2. Tap Manage your Google Account and then Personal info and privacy
  3. Scroll down to My Activity, which will open your settings in a web browser
  4. In the left hand navigation bar, click Activity Controls, where you’ll see Web & App Activity
  5. Toggle Web & App Activity off
  6. Scroll down and toggle Location History off as well

On an Android device

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on Google settings
  3. Tap Google Account (Info, security & personalization)
  4. Tap on the Data & personalization tab
  5. Tap on Web & App Activity
  6. Toggle Web & App Activity off
  7. Scroll down and toggle Location History off as well

(Some Android devices may have their own designs that mean the above instructions won’t be exactly right.  tested on a OnePlus 6, a Samsung Galaxy Note 9, a Google Pixel XL, and a Motorola Moto z3 Play and they all followed the workflow above. If you can’t find Google settings on the phone, you can also go to myactivity.google.com and then follow the browser instructions.)
